It had been a while since the last time I used Flash but I decided to revisit it to create a making-of video of my realistic Piranha Plant sculpture for youtube. The video proved to be quite popular (133,336 views in a little over two weeks and five stars) so I brought it back to its native format (with less of a loss in image quality in key parts). If you have seen the youtube video, this one has two shots of my teething baby Piranha Plant as well, together with mama before it got it's own pot.

It was fun to sculpt this as I pulled off a few successful experiments to get the inside of the mouth to look just gummy enough. Took me a while to finish it, particularly because of the design choice I made for the mouth structure, but it paid off in the end. I wanted the plant to look as if it really existed and the Mario version was a simplified cartoon version based off of it.

If they ever make a Nintendo or Mario themepark, which I really think they should - you need to be the lead sculpter! I could totally see your stuff scattered around a Mario themepark, or maybe even a Mario thrill ride! :D Could you imagine turning these things into animatronics lunging at you on a ride? I totally could! You can have my money! :D

Thank you! I'd love to go through a videogame theme park, actually. Why don't they do this already?

That was sweet. What kind of tools do you use for the textures and do you airbrush?

Mostly by hand with an X-Acto knife, along with any improvised texture starters (like sandpaper - perfect to do taste buds, followed by some tweaking with an X-Acto knife).

Thanks! I Google image the texture I want, study how and why it is that way and imagine how it would be applied on my subject, play some Pandora or Last FM, use an X Acto knife and let the hours fly by...

you did all the texture with just an x acto knife? that was the only tool?

I do start with a dried-out pen and then apply the finer details with the knife.
